Alastair Macfarlane

Route Asset Manager Geotechnics Drainage & Off-Track

Alastair Macfarlane is a chartered Civil Engineer with over 20 years experience. Alastair spent his early career working at the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in Berkshire before joining the rail industry as area structures engineer in London Waterloo. He has held a number of positions, proving experience maintaining large portfolios of civil engineering railway assets.

Today he leads a team of dedicated professionals on Scotland’s Railway. Their role is managing geotechnics, earthworks and legacy mining assets and the effects of natural hazards such as landslide, rockfall, flooding, vegetation (trees) and the lineside estate.

When he’s not attempting to control the forces of nature on the railway, Alastair can be found battling the Scottish elements on two wheels as a keen mountain biker and road cyclist. He lives on the outskirts of Glasgow with his wife and son.
